From 1 July, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will introduce free public transport for children under 15 and a nationwide commuter train pass for just €20 per month, covering all areas and towns in Spain. The scheme also includes reduced fares for other regular users and new measures to support cycling as a daily mode of transport.
This was announced in a statement following the publication of new fare resolutions for state-owned public transport, which come into effect on 1 July. On the same date, new discounts on urban and intercity public transport, co-financed by the Ministry, will also be implemented in autonomous communities and local authorities that opt in.
These fares, aimed at promoting public transport use, are set out in Royal Decree-Law 1/2025 of 28 January, which extended the 2024 discounts for frequent commuters until 30 June and introduced a new subsidy system for public transport for the second half of 2025.
In addition to these measures, state-owned bus services will offer discounts ranging from 40% to 70%, depending on age and the type of pass purchased.
Ten-ride tickets will receive a 40% discount, while monthly passes will be discounted by 50% for the general public, 70% for young people aged 15 to 26 and be free for those under 15.
For urban and intercity transport managed by regional and local authorities, the Ministry has launched a €355 million fund to cover free travel for children under 15 and a 50% discount on youth season tickets, with each administration setting the eligible age range.
All other tickets, excluding tourist, single and return fares, will have at least a 40% discount, with beneficiaries required to co-finance at least 20%. Additionally, subscriptions to recurring bicycle rental schemes will be discounted by 50%, also requiring 20% co-financing from local or regional governments
