On Barcelona's waterfront stands a tower instantly recognisable for its resemblance to a giant sail catching the Mediterranean breeze. Its glass façade and distinctive silhouette make it visible from many points across the city. It is the W Barcelona, although most people know it simply as Hotel Vela.

A giant sail facing the Mediterranean
The first impression leaves little room for doubt. The building appears to lean towards the sea, while its glass façade reflects the changing light of the Mediterranean.
It stands in the Plaça de la Rosa dels Vents, at the end of Paseo de Joan de Borbó, at one end of Barcelona's seafront.
The W Barcelona features 473 rooms and suites, all offering panoramic views of either the Mediterranean, the city or both.
Ricardo Bofill's project that transformed Barcelona's coastline
The project bears the signature of Ricardo Bofill, who designed the building to make the most of its privileged location and turn the views into an essential part of the guest experience.
Its glass façade changes character throughout the day, appearing almost white in bright sunlight before taking on warmer tones at sunset. From the upper floors, guests enjoy sweeping views over La Barceloneta and the Mediterranean Sea.
The original proposal envisioned a tower rising to 168 metres, considerably taller than the building that was ultimately constructed. In the end, it was 98.8 metres tall and had 29 floors when it opened.
The changes you cannot see from the outside
The hotel's recent transformation is barely noticeable from the seafront. The exterior remains unchanged, while the interior spaces have undergone a significant redesign.
- First phase: The renovation affects the rooms and suites located between floors 7 and 25.
- Rockwell Group: The international design studio is responsible for the new look of the rooms.
- New rooms: Renovated categories such as the Premier Sky and Superior Sky now feature updated interiors and floor-to-ceiling windows.
- New suites: The Onada Terrace Suites, located on the 21st floor, have been designed by Barcelona-based studio External Reference and include a private terrace and hot tub.
What it's like to stay at Hotel Vela
From the highest rooms, the Mediterranean dominates the horizon while Barcelona unfolds below.
The rooms and suites are designed to make the most of the hotel's unique beachfront setting. Among the most notable options are:
- Penthouse Suite: Located on the 25th floor, it offers 293 m2 of space, three bedrooms, a separate living room and two terraces.
- 360-degree views: The Penthouse overlooks Barcelona, Barceloneta and the Mediterranean.
- Loft Suites: They feature 177 m2, a private terrace and sea views.
What makes the Hotel Vela special is the feeling that the sea becomes part of the room itself whenever you look out of the window.
A new chapter on the Mediterranean
More than 15 years after opening, the Hotel Vela is entering a new phase with a renovation that modernises its spaces while preserving its original design. Work is set to continue from November 2026, covering the remaining rooms and communal areas, with completion scheduled for the first half of 2027.
The final result will emerge gradually. In the meantime, Barcelona is still home to one of its most distinctive and striking hotels.
