Released in 1962, Lawrence of Arabia is widely regarded as one of the most influential films in cinema history. Directed by David Lean and starring Peter O'Toole, it brought the story of T. E. Lawrence and the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War to the big screen. But did you know that many of the locations used to film Lawrence of Arabia are in Spain?

Where in Spain was Lawrence of Arabia filmed?

Much of the Spanish filming took place in Andalusia, primarily in Almería and Seville. The production spent several months in Almería in 1962 and employed a large number of local residents as extras.

  • Algarrobico Beach (Carboneras): Located near the mouth of the Alías River, this beach served as one of the film's main locations. A replica of Aqaba, the Jordanian port city central to the story, was built here. The set included around 300 buildings and camels brought from what was then the Spanish Sahara.
  • The dunes of El Toyo and San Miguel de Cabo de Gata: One of the film's most memorable sequences, the train attack, was filmed among the ancient dunes between El Toyo and San Miguel de Cabo de Gata. Nearly 2.5 kilometres of railway track were laid specifically for filming, and two trains were acquired from RENFE.
  • Rambla del Cautivo (Tabernas): In the Tabernas Desert, the production team created an oasis in the Rambla del Cautivo. Palm trees were planted especially for the set, some of which remained long after filming ended.
  • Nicolás Salmerón Park (Almería): This area was transformed into the streets of Cairo, with hundreds of local residents dressed as Egyptians. The production even incorporated a tram, which was reportedly moved using a concealed mechanism hidden from the cameras.
  • Plaza de España (Seville): The iconic square was used to recreate the British Officers' Club in Cairo. The complex was originally built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition and is located within María Luisa Park.
  • Hotel Alfonso XIII (Seville): Opened in 1929 and located on Calle San Fernando, the hotel's courtyard was used in several scenes connected to the officers' club in Cairo.
  • Casino de la Exposición (Seville): Situated on Avenida de María Luisa, this historic building doubled as Damascus Town Hall on screen.
  • Casa de Pilatos (Seville): One of Seville's most famous palaces, it served as the setting for the meeting between T. E. Lawrence and General Edmund Allenby.
