Spring is in the air and with the temperatures starting to rise little by little, you can’t have helped but notice the trees and flowers are starting to bloom. One of the most beautiful sights at this time of year is the cherry blossom tree, and you can’t afford to miss the spectacular cherry blossom flowers in full bloom in Spain's Valle del Jerte, something that needs to be added to your bucket list immediately. Here's all you need to know about the blossoms and where you can enjoy them best in Spain in 2021.

What are cherry blossoms?

Cherry trees, as the name suggests, are where we get the succulent, red fruit, but there are many varieties of cherry tree plant. The fruit of some trees is better for eating than others, while some are mostly decorative. The flower of the cherry blossom, or "flor de cerezo" in Spanish is normally a delicate pink or purple colour.

What do cherry blossoms symbolise?

Cherry blossoms symbolise the beauty of new life and renewal in spring. However, because their lifespan is so short, only around two weeks, cherry blossom flowers also represent the brief, fleeting nature of life.

What month is cherry blossom in Spain?

Most years, the cherry trees in Spain start to flower near the end of March and the beginning of April, but this is highly dependent on the weather and other conditions. According to the Valle del Jerte tourism board, they expect that in 2021 flowering could take place in the second half of March. This is only an estimate and they have stated that "everything will depend on the weather conditions between now and flowering". It’s not entirely clear yet, but it’s thought that the best time to see cherry blossoms in Spain will be at the end of March 2021.

Without a doubt the most famous and popular place to see cherry blossoms in Spain is in the Valle del Jerte, a valley full of over 1.5 million cherry trees in Cáceres in the province of Extremadura in western Spain. When the trees are in full bloom, it creates a wonderful effect like a white sheet covering the whole green area. The best time to go is on a weekday because there a fewer people. In 2021, the amount of people allowed to enter and see the blossoms may also be controlled because of limits due to the coronavirus, while the use of face masks is compulsory.

This wonderful springtime spectacle is usually accompanied by number of special events held in the region of the Jerte Valley to celebrate the blossoming of the cherry trees, or cerezos as they are known in Spanish. The Fiesta del Cerezo en Flor is one such event with traditionally showcases the culinary and cultural offering of the area. However, due to the health pandemic in 2021, events are currently not being advertised and things will be a lot more low-key, giving full protagonism to the blooms themselves.

The best way to see the Valle del Jerte is by taking a tour of the towns and villages that make up the area, such as Casas del Castañar, El Torno and Cabezuela del Valle. This way you can get a variety of views of one of nature’s greatest shows. Look out for the curious and famous statues of naked men looking out over the valley from the viewing point in El Torno. Remember that the cherry blossoms don’t all appear at once – the trees that are lower down normally blossom first and the ones in the higher, colder places come later.
