Spain is home to countless charming villages – yet only some hold the distinction of Historic-Artistic Site. For those dreaming of owning a house in a rural setting surrounded by nature and history, this selection offers a compelling opportunity.
This article brings together properties for sale in heritage-listed towns, with prices starting from €25,000.
Besalú, Girona
Besalú is one of the most distinctive medieval towns in Catalonia, declared a National Historic-Artistic Site in 1966 for its architectural significance.
The town features one of the most striking historic centres in Spain – with cobbled streets, arcaded squares and traces of its Jewish heritage. It is also well located near Girona and the Costa Brava. Among its most notable landmarks is the Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià River.
Several properties are currently listed for sale in the town. The most affordable is a rustic property with 40 m² of living space, two bedrooms, one bathroom and 100 m² of land, offered as bare ownership for €25,000.
La Alberca, Salamanca
Nestled in the heart of the Sierra de Francia in Salamanca, La Alberca was the first town in Spain to be declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Its cobbled streets, flower-filled balconies and timber-framed stone houses create a distinctive and picturesque setting.
A townhouse is currently for sale here for €45,000 – arranged over two floors with 110 m² of living space, two bedrooms, one bathroom and 110 m² of land. The property requires renovation.
Laredo old town, Cantabria
Laredo's old town – known as Puebla Vieja – was declared a Historic-Artistic Site for its remarkable medieval heritage and its historic importance between the 13th and 17th centuries along the Cantabrian coast.
It largely preserves its original layout, with six medieval streets extending from the Santa María de la Asunción church. Gothic churches, noble buildings and narrow lanes reflect its maritime past.
Unlike many northern towns, Laredo combines history with a coastal setting – offering both architectural interest and access to extensive beaches.
A 53 m² flat with two bedrooms and one bathroom is currently for sale in Puebla Vieja – featuring a central location and attractive wooden ceilings. The asking price is €55,000. The building inspection (ITE) was unfavourable, although the community is currently addressing the issue.
Aínsa, Huesca
If you are drawn to picturesque villages in mountainous, wooded landscapes, Aínsa stands out as one of the finest options. Located in the Pyrenees of Huesca, in the Sobrarbe region, its entire old quarter is recognised as a historic site and cultural landmark, preserved in a striking medieval style.
The Plaza Mayor, the castle and the cobbled streets lined with stone houses – together with its elevated position above the meeting point of the Cinca and Ara rivers – make it one of northern Spain’s most appealing rural destinations.
While renovation projects with land can be found from €10,000, a more modern option is this newly built flat in Aínsa. The property offers 42 m² of built space – with one bedroom, one bathroom and a terrace – and is priced at €149,600.
Capileira, Granada
Capileira, in the heart of the Alpujarra region of Granada, is another village that feels untouched by time. Set on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, it forms part of the Poqueira Gorge – an area designated a Historic-Artistic Site for its distinctive traditional architecture.
Its narrow, steep streets, whitewashed houses with flat roofs and characteristic covered walkways, known as tinaos, create a unique urban layout. From its viewpoints, there are sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada peaks.
Several properties are currently available in Capileira. Among them is a detached villa priced at €160,000 – offering exceptional views. Built in an Andalusian style, the home spans two floors with 122 m² of living space, four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Albarracín, Teruel
The next town in this selection of Historic-Artistic Sites is Albarracín – widely celebrated for its striking beauty and picture-postcard setting. Its popularity has grown in recent years, particularly on social media, where its unique character stands out. Historically, it was once a Taifa kingdom during the Islamic period.
Albarracín enchants visitors with its reddish-hued houses, city walls and fortress – all set within a dramatic natural landscape. The town appears to cling to the mountainside – creating one of the most distinctive silhouettes in Spain.
Properties can still be found in Albarracín at relatively accessible prices on idealista. For this selection, a detached villa stands out – originally built in the early 20th century and fully renovated in 2006. The property offers 282 m² of living space, with eight bedrooms, two bathrooms and a 230 m² romantic-style garden – priced at €310,000.
