Electric mobility is hampered for many Spanish households, as they cannot install an electric vehicle (EV) charger in a parking space they own. More than half of the homes in Spain (55%) do not have a garage space to install these charging points, which hinders access to electric vehicles for daily use, according to a study published by idealista, the real estate marketplace in southern Europe.
Home charger availability would vary depending on the province. Malaga has the most homes with garages where charging points can be installed, as 64% of homes have parking facilities. It is followed by Pontevedra (61%), Guadalajara (56%), Valladolid (56%), Lugo (55%), Granada (52%), Cantabria (52%), Toledo (51%), Murcia (51%), Castellon, Segovia and Ourense (50% in all three cases) as areas where at least half of their homes are likely to have a charger.
Guipuzcoa is at the other end of the scale, as only one in four homes (25%) has a garage, meaning electric chargers cannot be installed in the remaining three. They are followed by the provinces of Barcelona (30%), Vizcaya (30%), Jaén (32%), Cordoba (32%), Caceres (36%), Seville (37%), Valencia, Badajoz, Lleida and Burgos (38% in the four provinces). In Madrid, the percentage rises to 40%.
In the case of the province capitals, the differences are even more notable. The cities of Lugo (64%), Pontevedra (62%), Murcia (53%), Avila (53%), Guadalajara (53%) and Albacete (50%) lead in being able to install electric vehicle chargers. Below are cities such as Vitoria (49%), Ourense (48%), Teruel (48%), Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Soria, Ceuta, Oviedo and Leon (with 47% in all five cases).
In Cadiz, only 13% of homes have a garage, and 14% do in Barcelona. Above 20%, we find Bilbao (21%), Valencia (23%), Huelva (25%) and San Sebastián (26%). Not even a third of homes in Madrid have a parking space (28%).
Data collected and analysed by idealista/data, idealista's 'proptech', which provides information for a professional audience to facilitate strategic decision-making in Spain, Italy and Portugal. Methodology
This study was carried out by analysing 1.3 million listings on the idealista database throughout 2023. It included all listings that claimed to have a parking space (regardless of whether an extra price was requested or if it was outside or in the same building).
