Spain’s Pride celebrations are a riot of colour and inclusivity, popping up across the country from May to November (and sometimes beyond). Imagine massive parades in Madrid and Barcelona, plus the unique buzz of smaller, coastal Prides. These events aren't just parties, but an expression of Spain’s increasingly open and welcoming LGBTQ+ scene. They’re a chance to experience Spain at its most inclusive.

A brief history of Pride in Spain

Pride in Spain blossomed in the post-Franco era, born from the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. While pinpointing the very first LGBTQ+ demonstration in post-Franco Spain is tricky, Barcelona holds the honour of hosting the first major Pride demonstration in 1977. However, this event was met with police repression, highlighting the challenges faced by the early LGBTQ+ rights movement. Madrid's first official Pride march followed in 1979, becoming an annual event and eventually growing into the massive celebration we know today.

Over the decades, these gatherings evolved, transforming from small acts of resistance into the joyous celebrations we know today. This has led to Spain's most LGBTQ+-friendly cities becoming hubs for creativity and progression. The shift mirrors the significant legal and social progress made in Spain, including the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2005, a landmark moment for LGBTQ+ rights.

Madrid Pride, Orgullo Madrid (MADO), is one of the largest Pride celebrations in Europe, drawing literally millions of visitors. Held on the Saturday, 5th July this year, the parade is a massive spectacle of music and colour. But there's much more to it than just the parade, with concerts, parties, cultural events, and a buzzing atmosphere throughout the city. You'll find most of the fun in the neighbourhood of Chueca, the heart of Madrid's LGBTQ+ community.

Barcelona Pride

Barcelona Pride, kicking off on the 28th June this year, offers a distinct Mediterranean flavour and family-friendly feel. Expect beach parties, open-air concerts, and a packed cultural programme alongside the main parade. Eixample, also known as Gayxample, has been the city's iconic LGBTQ district since the 90s, boasting lots of gay bars, shops and meetup spots.

Sometimes referred to as Europe's gay capital, Sitges is a coastal town just south of Barcelona. Its Pride festivities are from the 4th to the 8th of June 2025. Starting in 2010, the festival is known for its lively, international atmosphere. It is particularly popular for its beach parties and inclusive, anything-goes spirit.

Maspalomas Pride

Maspalomas, in Gran Canaria, hosts two different LGBTQ+ events during the year. The first is Maspalomas Pride by Freedom, held between the 1st and 11th May. The second is one of the most popular Pride events in Europe outside the summer months. In 2025, Winter Pride takes place from the 10th to the 16th of November. Both are major draws for international visitors, with a focus on entertainment, beach events, and a week-long party atmosphere.

Benidorm, known for its welcoming spirit and inclusive atmosphere, provides the perfect backdrop for this celebration.  Benidorm Pride, held from the 2nd to the 8th September, brings its own unique brand of high-energy fun to the Spanish Pride calendar. The parade itself is a true spectacle, winding its way through the city streets with music, dancing, and colourful floats. Beyond the parade, there are also pool parties, beach events and live music.
