Considered by many to be the most beautiful road in the country, travelling along it is like experiencing an engineering masterpiece that combines breathtaking scenery, excitement and technical ingenuity in just 14 km.
An extraordinary route surrounded by wild nature
Roads can be much more than a means of getting from one place to another. When designed with care and vision, they can become a true sensory experience. This is certainly the case with the Sa Calobra road (MA-2141), widely regarded as the most beautiful road in Spain.
This winding and often seemingly impossible route is located on the island of Mallorca:
- Its planning and construction presented a major challenge for the engineers responsible for creating it.
- Built in 1932 without machinery and without a single tunnel, it adapts naturally to the rugged terrain, making the journey even more spectacular for visitors.
- To this day, it is still regarded as a masterpiece of road engineering.
Tips for driving the Sa Calobra road
The name Sa Calobra is often translated as "the snake", a fitting description of a road known for:
- Dramatic hairpin bends, steep gradients and towering rock faces.
- A descent of more than 800 metres in elevation across 14 km of tightly winding roads.
- Driving it is not for everyone: it can be demanding for inexperienced drivers or those uncomfortable on mountain roads.
- It is common to encounter large numbers of cyclists, for whom the route is both a challenge and an unforgettable experience.
- Buses, tourists and hire cars are frequent, so caution is essential on narrow sections with limited visibility.
It is advisable to familiarise yourself with the Sa Calobra road route before setting off so that you can anticipate its most demanding sections. One of the most famous is the Nudo de Corbata (Tie Knot), a spectacular 360-degree bend where the road loops back over itself.
What to see on the Sa Calobra road
The Sa Calobra road is located in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and leads to the small coastal settlement of the same name, home to a beautiful cove on Mallorca's north-west coast.
- The route begins on the MA-10 road. At the top of the mountain pass, a viewpoint offers the perfect place to admire the winding road that descends towards the sea.
- From here, the road twists between two mountains, Morro de Sa Vaca and Morro de Ses Fel-les. The result is a breathtaking route shaped by nature, surrounded by cliffs that reach heights of up to 200 metres.
- Sa Calobra provides access to one of Mallorca's most famous natural landmarks, the Torrent de Pareis gorge. The Torrent de Pareis can only be reached by boat or by travelling along this road.
- At the end of the route, you will find a parking area that provides access to Cala Tuent. Alternatively, an earlier turning leads directly to Sa Calobra cove.
