Spain is stepping up its bid in luxury travel by raising service standards in areas like Madrid, Barcelona and Marbella. Spending insights from high‑value visitors are shaping offers that balance economic returns with social value.
Why Spain is courting Asia’s high-spending travellers
Spain is sharpening its pitch to Asia’s high‑spending travellers. At Spain is Excellence's (SIE) “Coming Up!” forum, speakers pointed to sustained growth from Southeast Asia. Led by Singapore, these visitors spend up to three times more than Europeans. Furthermore, they prioritise gastronomy, luxury shopping and cultural heritage.
International travellers often regard Madrid and Barcelona as both authentic and safe, while providers move towards higher luxury standards, such as precise service, attention to detail, multilingual support and credible sustainability.
Argentina’s rebound adds momentum
Argentina has become a bright spot for Spain’s inbound market. According to Hosteltur, nearly 700,000 Argentines visited in 2024, spending more than €1.8 billion. Between January and May this year, Argentines made 6.7 million trips abroad, up 66% year on year.
Women and purpose-led choices
Industry panellists noted that women account for more than 60% of travel decisions in the premium segment. That influence is steering product design towards wellbeing, personalisation and experiences with a defined purpose, including environmental credentials, community benefit and meaningful cultural exchange.
Education as soft power—and a long-tail tourism driver
Spain’s international education ecosystem is strengthening its influence on travel flows. Business and hospitality schools attract thousands of international students each year across more than 100 nationalities.
The Camino de Santiago is also gaining ground with foreign visitors—40% of pilgrims in 2024—supported by partnerships with overseas universities that incorporate sections of the route into programmes.
What this means for expats and international visitors
Spain’s luxury push rests on three pillars: data‑led decisions, locally rooted product design and targeted outreach to high‑value markets in Asia and Latin America. For expats and overseas visitors, that points to more tailored service, stronger premium standards and a wider map beyond the Madrid–Barcelona axis.
On the ground, the top end of the market is shifting towards high‑touch hospitality, better language support and credible sustainability. This may be particularly notable in Madrid, Barcelona and the Costa del Sol, where the luxury real estate market continues to grow.
Some cities levy tourist taxes, with rates that vary by accommodation type and travel dates. Spain is broadly regarded as safe for travellers and students, with dense European air links and expanding long‑haul connections to Asia and Latin America.
