Spain offers one of Europe’s most varied landscapes – within a short distance, you can pass from rugged mountains to dense forests, from limestone canyons to river gorges shaped over millennia. This diversity makes the country a paradise for walkers and nature lovers. If cliffside routes appeal, these are some of Spain’s finest gorge trails.

Congost de Mont-Rebei (Lleida – Huesca)

The Mont-rebei Gorge, between Catalonia and Aragon, is among the most striking. Carved by the Noguera Ribagorzana River along the Montsec range, its sheer walls rise more than 500 metres.

The main trail is cut into the rock, with wooden walkways adding a sense of adventure to this moderately challenging route with constant panoramic views.

Gaitanes Gorge (Malaga)

In Málaga, the Gaitanes Gorge is home to the famous Caminito del Rey, one of Spain's most well-known hiking trails. Formed by the Guadalhorce River, its walls soar to over 300 metres.

The recently restored walkway clings to the rock face, offering a dramatic yet safe hiking experience over several kilometres.

Cares Trail (Asturias – León)

Further north, the Cares Trail – often called the Divine Gorge – runs through the heart of the Picos de Europa, connecting Poncebos in Asturias with Caín in León. It follows the course of the Cares River amidst imposing mountains.

It's one of the most popular hiking routes in northern Spain. The path, carved into the rock in the early 20th century for water channel maintenance, offers a relatively easy, albeit long, trail. Along the way, you'll enjoy tunnels, bridges and vertical rock faces.

Hermida Gorge (Cantabria)

The Hermida Gorge is the longest in Spain, stretching over 20 kilometres. Located in Cantabria, it connects the coast with the Liébana Valley, serving as a natural gateway to the Picos de Europa mountains.

Although much of the gorge is traversed by road, there are trails and viewpoints from which you can appreciate its grandeur. The Deva River has sculpted this landscape of vertical walls and lush vegetation.

Cerrada del Castril (Granada)

Located in the heart of the Sierra de Castril Natural Park, in the north of the province of Granada, this short but stunning trail runs alongside the river of the same name, in an environment where water and rock take centre stage.

One of its biggest attractions is the suspended walkway over the canyon, offering a unique perspective of the gorge. It's an easy and accessible trail, ideal for families or as an addition to a rural getaway in northern Granada.

Añisclo Canyon (Huesca)

The Añisclo Canyon is part of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. It is one of the wildest and least crowded valleys in the park, making it a perfect option if you are looking for tranquillity.

The Bellós River has carved this deep canyon over thousands of years. The route takes you through forests, past waterfalls and along narrow sections between towering gorges. In autumn, the contrasting colours transform the landscape into a truly breathtaking spectacle.

Alagón Canyon (Cáceres - Salamanca)

Less well-known but equally impressive, the Alagón Canyon lies between the provinces of Cáceres and Salamanca. The Alagón River has carved a deep gorge into the rock, creating natural viewpoints such as the famous Mirador de La Antigua, from which the Melero Meander can be observed.

This location is especially appealing to birdwatchers, as it is home to colonies of griffon vultures and other birds of prey. The natural beauty, tranquillity and panoramic views make it a hidden gem of Extremadura, waiting to be discovered.

Lobos River Canyon (Soria – Burgos)

The Río Lobos Canyon Natural Park is one of the most emblematic protected areas in Castile and León, located in the Pinares region. The Río Lobos has carved a deep canyon with limestone walls that stretches for more than 20 kilometres.

The most popular route is easy and practically flat, making it perfect for everyone. Along the way, you can visit the Templar hermitage of San Bartolomé and observe birds of prey nesting in the cliffs.
