The Spanish and Catalan capitals have managed to rank among the safest cities in the world, according to a study by The Economist. Barcelona came eleventh, while Madrid narrowly missed out on the top 20, coming in twenty-first place. The report by the English media takes into account up to 80 indicators on infrastructure, health, environment and digital security. At the top of the ranking is Copenhagen, followed by Toronto and Singapore. When it comes to the different categories that have been considered, the reality is that the pandemic has had a major influence on the ranking. In this section, Barcelona climbs two places to ninth, while Madrid comes out worst, dropping to 33rd place.

Residents in Barcelona continue to be concerned about insecurity in the city, while residents in Madrid tend to be more satisfied. According to a recent survey in Barcelona, based on 808 interviews, 14% of the city's inhabitants cite insecurity as their main concern (1.6 points more than in the last report), while 8.4% mention political management. In third and fourth place, tied with 8.1%, are unemployment, working conditions and access to housing.
