San Francisco is the city that combines the best living conditions based on various factors, from sustainability, its evolution and tolerance among the population, to the culture, leisure and nightlife on offer. Amsterdam and Manchester complete the top three of the index compiled by Time Out magazine, where Barcelona (14) and Madrid (18) 'sneak' into the top 20 most desirable cities for social life.

Time Out's annual index combines the experiences of more than 25,000 people from around the world with the opinions of the magazine's network of local editors and experts. After the three cities already mentioned, there are three European cities, Copenhagen (Denmark), Prague (Czech Rep.) and Porto (Portugal), two American cities, Montreal (Canada) and New York (USA), plus Tel Aviv (Israel) and Tokyo (Japan).

One of the most highly valued experiences this year was how the cities adaptated to Covid restrictions in order to keep culture and leisure open. In the top positions, community spirit, for facilities for alternative means of transport like bicycles and the ability to make new friends were also highly valued.

Of the Spanish regional capitals in the ranking, the willingness to keep some venues open during the pandemic, the gradually reopening of cultural activities and the ease of getting to know new people all stand out.
