No, we don't have any miracle formulas, and we won't magic your 50-metre house to become 75m2... but this article does include some very useful tips for adding a few extra metres without construction work.
Sliding doors in passage areas
Do you have a corridor leading to the dining room or living room? Well, don't hesitate: replace your conventional swing doors with sliding doors. You'll notice you have more space in the passage areas, such as hallways and the hall. Note: the partition must be hollow for the door to be able to slide easily. If you add a pane of glass, you will gain light and this small detail will add extra spaciousness.
Another simple option is to remove the doors altogether, leaving the opening. If you paint the frame white, it will create more light.
Folding beds in children's bedrooms
Do the little ones in the house share a room? You may have very practical bunk beds, but they take up space. We recommend replacing them with folding bunk beds, preferably with a steel structure and slatted base, because they last a long time (which is essential for this type of bed that you will be going up and down every day). You will see that, with this furniture solution, you will create an uncluttered space. They're also highly recommended for the guest room.
Bidet-free bathroom
We know it was a great invention, but let's face it, we hardly ever use it. So to save space in the bathroom, get rid of it, and gain at least 0.5 square metres. You can either take advantage of that space, leaving it empty, or place a cupboard there, depending on your needs. It usually costs little more than €100. Also, if you have a folding shower screen, switch it to a sliding one.
Integrate the balcony
The pandemic taught us that balconies are life but if you want to integrate those additional metres into the living room, you can do so without doing any construction work. How? Do not remove the doors or change the opening. Of course, to take advantage of that space, invest in quality windows and properly insulate the exterior walls.
Well-positioned furniture
We can often gain square metres by simply moving our furniture around. For example, one of the main pieces of living room furniture is the sofa. If you have a chaise longue, place it next to the corner wall. Sofas are generally better against the wall to maximise space. In your bedroom, also see if you can gain some extra space by moving the bed.
