A brief history of Pride in Spain
Pride in Spain took shape in the years following the end of the Franco dictatorship, rooted firmly in activism and the fight for basic rights. Today, you'll find Pride celebrations in Spain's most LGBTQ+-friendly cities.
- Barcelona hosted the first major LGBTQ+ demonstration in 1977. It was met with police repression and showed just how difficult those early years were for campaigners.
- Madrid’s first official Pride march followed in 1979, laying the groundwork for what would become one of Europe’s largest celebrations.
Over time, these gatherings shifted from small, politically charged protests into large-scale public events that still carry a strong social message. The legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2005 marked a defining moment, placing Spain among the first countries in the world to recognise marriage equality.

Madrid Pride 2026
Madrid Pride, or Orgullo Madrid (MADO), is one of Europe’s largest Pride events.
- In 2026, the festival runs from 25 June to 5 July 2026, with the main Madrid Pride Parade taking place on 4 July 2026.
The parade itself draws vast crowds and winds through the city in a colourful, high-energy procession of floats, music and political messaging.
Beyond the parade, the programme includes concerts, cultural events, talks and open-air parties across the capital. Chueca remains the focal point, packed with bars, community spaces and street stages throughout the week.
Barcelona Pride 2026
Barcelona Pride takes place from 28 June until 18 July, with the big parade on Saturday 18 July. The city brings a Mediterranean feel to proceedings, with beachside gatherings, outdoor concerts and a strong cultural programme alongside the main parade.
The heart of the celebrations is Eixample, widely referred to as Gaixample, where LGBTQ+-owned businesses, bars and community venues have shaped the area’s identity since the 1990s.
Sitges Pride 2026
Sitges Pride runs from Wednesday 10 June to Sunday 14 June 2026. This small coastal town just south of Barcelona has long attracted an international LGBTQ+ crowd, and Pride week amplifies that cosmopolitan feel.
Events centre around the seafront and the compact old town, with open-air stages, themed parties and a well-attended parade along the promenade.
Maspalomas Pride 2026
Maspalomas Pride in Gran Canaria will take place from 4 to 10 May 2026. Held in the resort area of Playa del Inglés and around the Yumbo Centre, it marks the start of the Pride season in Spain.
The setting gives it a distinctive character, with pool parties, beach gatherings near the dunes of Maspalomas and nightly entertainment. Later in the year, Maspalomas also hosts Winter Pride, which has grown into a major event in its own right, attracting visitors looking for a warmer escape as autumn sets in across mainland Europe.

Benidorm Pride 2026
Benidorm Pride will take place from 1 to 6 September 2026. Set against the backdrop of high-rise hotels and wide sandy beaches, it brings a distinctly Costa Blanca flavour to the Pride calendar.
The parade moves through the city centre in a lively procession, accompanied by music stages, pool parties and themed club nights. Benidorm’s long-standing appeal to international visitors, particularly from the UK, gives the event a noticeably mixed crowd of locals and expats.
