Spain has been ranked the leading retirement destination in Europe and third worldwide in the 2026 Global Retirement Report and Index, according to Global Citizen Solutions.

The country received a score of 99.6 out of 100 across measures including quality of life, mobility and citizenship, tax optimisation, administrative processes, and cost and investment.

The ranking places Spain ahead of other European retirement destinations at a time when many Britons are looking further ahead, weighing up where they might spend later life alongside the practicalities of visas, healthcare, housing and everyday costs.

Global Citizen Solutions describes Spain as the “single largest European destination for retired UK migrants”, underlining the country’s long-standing pull for Britons planning a move abroad.

Spain’s retirement appeal goes beyond the weather

A mild climate and outdoor way of life remain part of Spain’s draw, but relocation decisions usually rest on more practical matters. The Global Citizen Solutions index takes in issues that can have a real bearing on retirement plans: the process of securing residence, options for family members, taxation, mobility and the cost of establishing a life abroad.

For UK nationals, moving to Spain after Brexit involves more paperwork than it once did. A non-lucrative visa is often used by retirees with sufficient savings or passive income, while residency applications require applicants to meet financial, health insurance and documentation requirements. Rules can change, so applications are best checked against current guidance from the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

Spain’s public healthcare system is another consideration, though access for new residents depends on an individual’s circumstances, including residency status and whether they are working, drawing a UK pension or holding private insurance.

Costa del Sol leads among British buyers planning retirement in Spain

The Costa del Sol remains the most popular region for British purchasers at Taylor Wimpey España, according to the developer. The company reported an 18% year-to-date increase in sales in the region by September 2026.

Its buyer profile also suggests that retirement planning is starting long before people stop working. Taylor Wimpey España says its largest group of British buyers is aged between 45 and 59, with many purchasing a second home that could later become a full-time base.

Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey España, said:

“Many of our buyers are looking ten or twenty years ahead to their retirement and choosing properties that will serve them in their golden years as well as providing a place to create many happy memories with family and friends before then.”

The Costa del Sol has established international communities, a wide range of healthcare providers, airports with frequent UK connections and towns where daily life can be managed without a car, depending on the location.

Apartments and key-ready homes appeal to future retirees

Apartments are particularly popular among British buyers, Taylor Wimpey España said, especially properties close to beaches, golf courses, shops and restaurants. For people planning a gradual move, a lock-up-and-leave home can be easier to manage than a detached property requiring garden, pool and security upkeep.

Pritchard added:

“Typically, British buyers prefer apartments as their property type, as they enable them to be at the heart of the action, whether on a golf resort or somewhere that balances beach access with amenities being within strolling distance.”

New-build homes may also come with stronger energy ratings and lower maintenance demands in the early years, although buyers should still budget for community fees, local taxes, insurance, utilities and the costs of using a property only part of the year.

Key-ready homes have a particular appeal for purchasers who do not want to wait for construction to finish. Pritchard said that a new home can feel closely tied to the prospect of a major life change:

“There’s a sense of excitement about a forthcoming new life chapter, such as planning for retirement, that ties in with wanting a brand-new home.”

New homes in Estepona and Torrevieja

Taylor Wimpey España highlighted two key-ready developments in the press release.

  • At Sunny Golf in Estepona, Málaga, the final two-bedroom apartment was advertised from €370,000 plus VAT, with a €15,000 furniture bonus at the time of the release.

The property has south-west-facing terraces and views across Estepona Golf.

  • In Torrevieja, Alicante, the final penthouses at Eden Beach were advertised from €540,000 plus VAT.

Taylor Wimpey España says the homes have an A energy rating and sit around 700 metres from La Mata beach, with large terraces and sea views.

As with any advertised new-build property, availability, incentives and pricing can move quickly. Buyers should also factor in VAT, legal fees, notary and Land Registry costs, plus any mortgage expenses where relevant, rather than budgeting only for the advertised purchase price.

Retirement in Spain needs a practical plan

Spain’s position at the top of the European retirement ranking reflects the mix of lifestyle and administrative factors assessed by Global Citizen Solutions. Still, a high score cannot replace individual planning.

The right location depends on year-round life rather than a fortnight’s holiday rhythm. Access to healthcare, public transport, local services, community ties, summer heat, language learning and the total cost of owning a home all deserve a proper look before committing.
