The Sohail castle in the province of Malaga, Spain is a great day out for all

The Castillo de Sohail castle is located on a hill 125 feet above sea level, at the mouth of the Fuengirola river. Its location has led it to become an exceptional lookout point from where you can admire the Sierra de Mijas mountain range and the whole municipality of Fuengirola.

Admission to this famous monument is completely free, whereas the general admission fee used to be 3 euro, so now there’s no excuse not to go and visit. There’s no doubt that a day out at the castle is very attractive for tourists and families with children, and the idea is to promote the space for cultural and musical events.

The castle of Sohail, symbol of Fuengirola

The Castillo de Sohail is a landmark in the city of Fuengirola. If you’re spending your holidays on the Costa del Sol, don't forget to take a tour of the town and of this magnificent 12th century fortification of great historical value. In addition, you should also know about the cultural events and music concerts that take place inside the ancient walls during the summer months.

For example, the Great International Beer Festival is held at Sohail Castle in July 2018 (don’t be fooled because it was in August in previous years!). During the event, visitors can sample dishes from Germany along with typical beer mugs and craft beers included and enjoy an exceptional atmosphere with live orchestras and entertainment activities.

In August, there is also the Fuengirola Medieval Market where you can buy different handmade goods, try typical products from the past and do activities for all ages (archery, storytelling and pony riding for the kids), as well as various shows of jugglers and minstrels.

The castle, just like other buildings in Spain, was built in a strategic area as a protective measure against possible attacks. Phoenicians, Romans and Muslims all populated the area over the years and the Roman ruins found on the hill are clear proof of this. So many different societies chose the site as an important defensive position because it was possible to control traffic on the river and monitor communication on land between Malaga and Marbella.
