When you think of Murcia, the first thing on your mind could be beaches, nightlife or sunny weather. These things are all true, but Murcia also has so much more to offer. The entire region of Murcia in the south of Spain is full of rich history and cultural heritage and is in fact one of the most varied destinations in Spain. One particular town in the region, Cieza, dates to the Paleolithic age and is notably special for its popular fiestas.
The Flowering of Cieza
At the beginning of Spring, the countryside around this Spanish town transforms into a sea of colour during the annual “Floración de Cieza” (the Flowering of Cieza), as the fruit orchards blossom to cover the land in a multicoloured blanket of flowers.
During the month of March, the town is filled with the pleasant smell of flowers, plums, almonds, peaches and apricots, among the other fruit trees in the orchards that fill Cieza with colour. These explosions of colour are a real feast for the senses and the lands of Murcia really dress up to welcome visitors at this time of year.
Local celebrations
Such beauty calls for a celebration: a festival like the Flowering of Cieza results in a multitude of activities, all closely related to the rich landscape. This year, there is a rich cultural programme for tourists and locals, including hiking trails, poetry readings, exhibitions and classical music concerts. In addition, this year there will also be gastronomic menus with typical products from the area and photography contests. All the specific information about the festivities can be found on the website of the toursit board in Murcia.
This popular celebration in Spain is simply spectacular, a unique event that is not to be missed. If you haven't visited yet, it means you haven't seen everything. This is one of the most interesting events to see, not only in Murcia, but in all of Spain.
