Because of the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown, confinement to our homes has very quickly become a reality in Spain and one of the consequences has been the cancellation of hundreds of concerts and cultural events in our country and abroad. These are extraordinary circumstances, but not wanting to leave the public without live music entertainment, a group of independent artists have clubbed together to make the most of a bad situation and create “Cuarentena Fest” (Quarantine Fest). This is a self-managed initiative that will last until 27th March 2020, and aims to reach as many homes as possible, in Spain and beyond.
With a rise in the online cultural offering, as well as the trending hashtags #YoMeQuedoEnCasa and #QuedateEnCasa (translated to English as "I'm staying at home" and "Stay at home" respectively), the idea for the festival was born as a platform of positive creation and also some lighthearted entertainment during this time which may be challenging for many. In addition to this, the initiative is also for the festival to be a space to shed light on the potential economic consequences that the coronavirus pandemic could have on this already precarious sector. The organisation has made it clear that "they are aware that culture cannot always be free”, and for that reason from the platform they encourage fans to contribute their “grain of sand”, via donations which can be voluntarily given on the website.
More than 50 bands will offer concerts from their homes which will be broadcast on YouTube as part of the initiative, a festival that seeks to "make the state of responsible confinement imposed by the Spanish authorities more bearable" because of the coronavirus. Four concerts will be offered daily from 7-10pm. This is the planned schedule:
