Ever dreamed of living like royalty in your own castle? Now could be your chance if you've a few million euros to spare, as Spain's Ministry of the Interior has decided to sell Castillo de la Vela in Maqueda, Toledo at auction. This Spanish castle for sale in 2022 has a starting price of 2.7 million euros, that is, 71.2% cheaper than the previous time the castle was up for auction in October 2014. Interested parties can send their bids until 14:00 on 18th April, although the auction will be held on 4th May, according to El Independiente.
Why is the castle for sale? This appears to be a new attempt to get rid of the Castillo de La Vela, within the policies of divestment in real estate assets that the central government has been promoting since 2013. After three failed attempts, the price has therefore been significantly lowered and is up for sale for 2.7 million euros.
On the two previous occasions, the auction was deserted. The sale of assets of the various ministries has been a constant trickle for years, in an attempt to reduce public spending. However, this castle, which is part of the Guardia Civil's (Spain's Civil Guard) real estate, has the particularity that an investment of close to 5 million euros was made to convert it into the Benemérita Museum.
Castillo de la Vela has a built surface area of 3,524 m2 and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument on 3rd June 1931. In 1953 it was then refurbished and converted into a Civil Guard barracks until 1998. It is currently in disuse. For this reason, Spain's Official State Gazette has published the listing of the auction along with six other plots in provinces such as Cordoba, Leon and Barcelona. If the castle is not sold in the first auction, it would be put up for sale again for 2.3 million euros.
