San Jorge, a Lower Maestrazgo village
San Jorge is a small village in the Bajo Maestrazgo region. It has a population of about 1,200 inhabitants and is around 90 kilometres from the provincial capital and 15 minutes from the beach by car.
The village is surrounded by an unirrigated landscape, with fields of crops and hills dominated by pine trees. San Jorge enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters, which is always appealing, especially for international travellers.
A first-class golf course
Panorámica Golf is a large real estate development and San Jorge's main attraction, approximately seven kilometres from the village centre. This complex covers a total area of 2.5 million m2. Of this space, around 900,000 m2 are reserved for golf courses, while the remaining area is housing estates and single-family homes.
In contrast to San Jorge's old town, with around 500 homes, the Panorámica complex has approximately 3,000 homes. During the summer months, these homes can accommodate up to 10,000 people.
What to see in San Jorge
If you decide to visit San Jorge, be sure to explore its iron forging and barrel-making tradition. The Artisan Cooperage on the outskirts of the town is an iconic place that bears witness to this craft.
In the old town, you will find numerous references to the legend of St George and the dragon, such as weather vanes, sculptures and drawings on the façades. These urban features reflect the town's deep connection with this fable and the Order of Montesa, characteristic of the Maestrazgo region.
Moreover, you can't miss El Bovalar Municipal Nature Reserve, a fascinating place that offers a simple trail, ideal for families, with a treasure hunt for the little ones. Here, you can discover four lime kilns, a chasm and several artistic forge sculptures, making your visit an educational and entertaining experience.
San Jorge festivities and traditions
San Jorge is a great place for a getaway if you enjoy regional festivals. The village hosts several celebrations enjoyed by locals and visitors of all ages all year round.
The most outstanding festivities are the patron saint festivities held in honour of St. George on 23 April. The village is filled with parades, open-air dances and cultural shows during these days.
Other important festivals are held in July, and the traditional trades fair in August. Besides these main festivals, San Jorge also holds other celebrations throughout the year, such as:
- Sant Antoni Abad, 17 January
- The Pilgrimage of the 1 May, which involves walking up to San Jorge castle
- Easter Week, with processions and religious events
- Santa Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, on 22 November
- Christmas festivities, with a live nativity scene and the Three Kings parade
