The San Juan Festival in Alicante, officially the Hogueras de San Juan 2026, is not just a few nights of bonfires but a month-long build-up that takes over the city.
Locally called Fogueres de Sant Joan in Valencian, it's one of Spain's biggest San Juan festivals. It blends satire, sculpture, fireworks and devotion, all wrapped up in that slightly chaotic Mediterranean rhythm that Alicante does so well.
What is the San Juan Festival in Alicante?
The Hogueras de San Juan mark the summer solstice and have been Alicante’s flagship celebration since the 1920s. Across the city, neighbourhood committees design and build elaborate hogueras: towering, often satirical monuments made of wood and papier-mâché. For a few days, they stand proudly in plazas and side streets before being ceremonially burned during the famous Nit de la Cremà.
It is not only about fire. Expect daily mascletàs (thunderous daytime firework displays), parades with traditional dress, flower offerings to the Virgen del Remedio, open-air dances, brass bands and late-night parties in temporary tents known as barracas and racós.
The festival is officially recognised as a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest, yet it still feels deeply local.

For 2026, the Hogueras de San Juan in Alicante run throughout June, with the main days taking place between 19 and 24 June 2026. The fireworks competition continues until 29 June 2026.
While many visitors focus on 23 and 24 June, the calendar actually starts earlier, with official proclamations, parades and preview mascletàs from the first week of the month.
The heart of the celebrations remains Plaza de los Luceros, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the historic centre and the seafront near Playa del Postiguet and Playa del Cocó.
