Catalonia is a land of varied landscapes – stretching from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees across more than 32,000 km². In its northernmost reaches, where the mountains form a natural border with France in the heart of the Val d’Aran, lie some of the region’s most rugged and sparsely populated areas. It is within this Pyrenean strip that Catalonia’s northernmost village is found.
The northernmost town in Catalonia
In terms of settlements, the northernmost town is Canejan. Although it does not sit at the absolute northernmost point of Catalan territory, it is the most northerly inhabited village – set close to the French border at an altitude of around 900 metres.
With a population of just 95 in 2025, Canejan stands out for its elevated position overlooking the Toran River valley – surrounded by dense forests and high mountain scenery. Its history is closely tied to rural life, livestock farming and the use of water resources at the Toran hydroelectric plant.
Its steep, narrow streets – adapted to the terrain – preserve the traditional Aranese character. Just one kilometre from the French border, it offers an appealing destination for those seeking authenticity and unspoilt nature.
What to see in Canejan
Small in size but big on charm, Canejan offers several points of interest that reflect its history and natural surroundings.
- San Saturnino Church: Located in the highest part of the village, it dominates the hamlet with its austere silhouette. Of Romanesque origin, it was extensively renovated in the 19th century.
- San Juan de Torán Church: Located in the centre of Sant Joan de Toran, it is another example of Pyrenean Romanesque architecture.
- Toran River Valley: The natural environment is one of the village's greatest attractions, with trails among beech and fir trees along the river.
- Campespín area: An ideal natural space for excursions, where you can appreciate the rich forest of the area.
- Historic hydroelectric power plants: The Puente del Rey and Toran power plants are part of the village's industrial heritage.
Living in Canejan
Living in Canejan means embracing tranquillity and being surrounded by nature. With fewer than one hundred inhabitants, life unfolds at a leisurely pace, in an environment where everyone knows each other and where the seasons dictate the daily rhythm. Winter can be demanding, but it also lends a special charm to the landscape.
At the same time, its proximity to France and other towns in the Aran Valley allows for relatively close services and connections.
What is the northernmost point of Catalonia?
Although Canejan is the northernmost urban centre, the northernmost geographical point is located within the neighbouring municipality of Bausén. Its town centre is slightly further south than Canejan's, but its territory extends a few kilometres further north.
This point is located in a high mountain area near the Carlac Waterfall. It is a difficult-to-access area with steep terrain, forests and alpine meadows.
