La Alberca, Salamanca
Set in the heart of the Sierra de Francia, La Alberca was the first village in Spain to receive Historic-Artistic status. It's also officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Its cobbled lanes, flower-filled balconies and timber-framed stone houses create a striking setting.
A village house is currently listed here for €45,000. It spans 110 m² over two floors, with two bedrooms, one bathroom and a 110 m² plot. The property requires renovation.
Puebla Vieja de Laredo, Cantabria
The old quarter of Laredo, known as Puebla Vieja, was granted Historic-Artistic status thanks to its outstanding medieval heritage. Plus, it was recognised for its importance along the Cantabrian coast between the 13th and 17th centuries.
It still retains much of its original urban layout, structured around six medieval streets that stretch up towards the church. Gothic churches, noble houses and narrow lanes reflect its seafaring past.
In Puebla Vieja, a 53 m² flat with two bedrooms and one bathroom is for sale for €55,000. Centrally located and featuring exposed wooden ceilings, it has an unfavourable building inspection (ITE), with remedial works pending by the community.
Aínsa, Huesca
If mountain scenery and wooded landscapes appeal, Aínsa is a strong contender as one of the top medieval villages in Spain. Located in the Huesca Pyrenees, its entire medieval old town is protected as a Historic-Artistic Site and Cultural Heritage Asset.
The Plaza Mayor, castle and stone-built houses line cobbled streets on a hilltop overlooking the confluence of the Cinca and Ara rivers. It remains one of the most appealing rural destinations in northern Spain.
While renovation projects with land can start at around €10,000, this newly built 42 m² flat has been selected. It includes one bedroom, one bathroom and a terrace, and is priced at €149,600.
Capileira, Granada
In the heart of the Alpujarra region, Capileira sits high on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It forms part of the Barranco de Poqueira group of villages, recognised as a Historic-Artistic Site for their traditional architecture.
Steep, narrow streets, whitewashed houses with flat launa roofs and characteristic passageways linking homes create a distinctive layout. Viewpoints across the Sierra Nevada peaks add to its appeal.

Albarracín, Teruel
The final village on this list is Albarracín, widely shared on social media for its dramatic setting and historic architecture. During the Andalusian period, it was a taifa kingdom.
Albarracín stands out for its reddish-toned houses, defensive walls and alcázar, all set within a rugged natural landscape. The village climbs up the mountainside.
Affordable houses can be found locally, but this detached property has been selected. Originally built in the early 20th century and fully restored in 2006, it measures 282 m² with eight bedrooms, two bathrooms and a 230 m² romantic-style garden. It is on the market for €310,000.
