This year, summer is shaping to have more unknowns than ever as the conditions for the opening of the swimming pools or the beaches change depending on the COVID-19 situation in Spain. Many people are already starting to look for affordable and safe alternatives for the hottest months, as the summer holidays in 2020 don't seem to be cancelled in spite of the situation. Among the most searched for terms on the home improvement platform Houzz, by individuals during March, April and May in the height of confinement were "terraces" (60%), "rooftop" (57%), "balcony" (51%), "pool" (85%), "jacuzzi" (26%) and "fountain" (52%).

Swimming pool is understandably one of the most searched for terms in recent weeks and it is not surprising, since installing a pool at home is a good alternative to create a refreshing space to enjoy the summer in a different way. But knowing where to start is the big question. Is a pool always the best option? There are many aspects to consider before embarking on the installation of a pool and there are also less expensive alternatives that you may want to explore. Don't miss out on these 4 ideas:

This is the most practical option for those who seek to incorporate some sort refreshing element into a property without resorting to major work and without taking up much space. Outdoor showers are within reach of anyone and bring an air of freshness to a terrace, patio or garden in the summer months. Any corner is good for this option and there is a wide variety of models to choose from. Bear in mind that to install a shower you need a drain nearby to prevent puddles and channel the water, however, with the help of a professional, installation will be simple and will not bring you too many headaches.

Not everything has to be about swimming pools or hot tubs; there are much simpler solutions that achieve the same effect, such as creating a refreshing and relaxing space at home. Fountains are a very good solution, in fact, this has been one of the terms that has increased the most (52%) on the Houzz platform compared to the same period last year, possibly because of the ability of the sound of water to generate relaxation. Find a shady spot in your garden or terrace and create a relaxing space around it with plants, some benches or a hammock to enjoy a hot summer afternoon.

The trend of opening up interior spaces such as the kitchen or living room to exterior spaces is increasing, so why not do the same with the bathroom? Freestanding baths are a good way to bring these spaces closer to the outside and, in addition to being decorative, they are easy to install: all you need is a water connection and a drain. If you are thinking of placing it in a corner of the garden or terrace, ask a local professional about the most weather-resistant material. If this option seems too risky and you don't have a private enough view, try to make some modifications to your bathroom that will allow you to enjoy a relaxing corner that simulates the outdoors. Incorporating a skylight into the conventional bathroom ceiling will bring life and freshness to the room. In fact, the word skylight (59%) has also been one of the terms that has grown the most in number of searches on the Houzz platform in recent months. These elements facilitate ventilation and will also allow you to integrate greenery into the room.
