The COVID-19 pandemic has changed life as we know it. On one hand, these times of confinement in Spain have served to show people new needs that are emerging at home and that there are also currently many spaces that do not work or need to be redesigned to adapt them to the new normal. These changes can range from a good space for teleworking, to improved storage in the kitchen, without forgetting the connectivity of the house.
Houzz, the leading online platform for home design and renovation, has developed some interior design ideas with the help of the millions of home owners and professionals, in order to help with solutions throughout the home for the new normal that we are currently facing.
Work spaces
Teleworking is here to stay in Spain. Many individuals were forced to improvise a work space at home during the pandemic. In fact, the terms "home office" and "offices" were among the most sought-after terms on the Houzz platform from January to May as their searches increased by 73%, 35% and 60%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2019.
After working from home in improvised spaces, many people will now want to have a better work space, more suited to their needs and to those of their home. The important thing is to optimise the space and integrate it into the general decoration of your home without compromising too much space.
Kitchen storage is a key element
Having enough space in the kitchen to store food has become very important during this period of quarantine. As leaving the house was restricted, everyone had to store larger amounts of food compared to usual in small spaces. However, the good news is that having a pantry is within everyone's reach.
If size isn't a problem, a corner of the kitchen can be used to create a separate area for food storage. In smaller spaces, columns and tall cabinets can serve this function in a comfortable and functional way.
Contactless homes
The need to incorporate technology that allows us to control certain functions with our voice, without the need to touch buttons or surfaces, will be a growing trend in our homes. More and more professionals specialised in this area in Spain can advise you on the different technologies available on the market and that can be installed in the home in a simple way, such as intelligent appliances, voice control or even doors with facial recognition.
More hygienic bathrooms
The bathroom will be one of the spaces in our homes where we will see the greatest changes in the short- and medium-term. According to Houzz's latest report, 39% of individuals have changed the layout of their bathroom in the last three years, which shows that Spaniards are increasingly open to making changes in a room where the layout has remained practically the same for half a century.
It is likely that changes will be made to make these spaces more hygienic, for example, separating the toilet from the rest of the elements, or opening the bathrooms to the outside to give them more light and improve ventilation.
