US e-commerce giant Amazon plans to invest €460 million to open a new fulfilment centre in Stockton-on-Tees, England. The 141,000 m2 centre is set to open in October and will employ between 1,000 and 2,000 people. The company has already started recruiting technology and innovation professionals.
In the North East of England, the new jobs created will bring the company's total workforce to 6,000 full and part-time roles and the company's investment to more than €1.9 billion since 2010. This warehouse becomes Amazon's fourth logistics centre in the North East of England.
The development was already scheduled to open before Amazon decided to take a break from opening logistics centres in Europe, specifically in Spain. Last year, the US distribution group decided to freeze new logistics warehouse developments in Spain for two years until 2024. In July, Amazon already decided to stop projects throughout Europe, and Spain was no exception.
On the Iberian Peninsula, it has already suspended four projects due to open in the coming months. The company decided to cancel constructing fulfilment centres already designed in Reus (Tarragona), Girona, Vitoria and Seville.
The company had planned to build around 150,000 m2 of warehouse floor space in Spain that will not see the light of day due to oversupply and falling demand.
