The Port of Málaga has given the final approval for La Marina de San Andrés, a new marina covering nearly 115,000 m², to be built in the Huelin neighbourhood, just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre.

The port authority has approved the final project following "several minor corrections" required to accommodate the sports complex, as reported by Diario Sur. After several years of administrative procedures, the project will now be handed over to the city's Urban Planning Department for the approval of the building permit.

In 2021, the Qatari investment fund Al Alfia – the same group behind Málaga's Torre del Puerto – obtained the necessary permits for the project. Construction of the new marina is expected to begin this summer, with an investment of €54 million, according to Diario Sur, a Spanish newspaper.

Features of the new marina

This new sports complex, designed by the architectural studio of José Seguí, will be situated at the mouth of the Guadalmedina River, just to the west of the current port area and opposite the future El Bulto neighbourhood, which is already under construction.

The port area is expected to provide space for 566 vessels, ranging in length from 8 to 30 metres. It will also feature approximately 450 parking spaces.

Of the 115,000 m² of surface area, more than 65,000 m² will be on the water, while the remaining nearly 50,000 m² will be on land. Included in these spaces will be a commercial area consisting of seven two-storey buildings, covering around 3,000 m², located in the western section of the future port. The design will mirror the layout of Málaga's existing Muelle Uno.

In addition to the shopping and dining options, the complex will also house a sailing school and the much-debated Music Auditorium project.

At the end of last year, the City Council acquired land within the future sports complex, previously owned by the port authority, for €9 million. As a result, it was only natural that this maritime project would move forward.

However, according to Málaga Hoy the local government estimates a budget of €200 million for the construction of the music complex, which will be funded through a combination of public and private sources. Half of the funding will come from local authorities: €20 million from the City Council, €25 million from the Andalusian Regional Government, €10 million from the Málaga Provincial Council, and €45 million from the central government.

The remaining amount will be covered by private financing, though the details of this have yet to be disclosed.
