The controversial Torre del Puerto de Málaga, the luxury skyscraper planned for the Levante Dock, will ultimately stand 144 metres tall. This was confirmed by David Chipperfield, the architect behind the design, during an event at City Hall attended by Málaga’s mayor, Francisco de la Torre and the port authorities overseeing the dock’s management.

Initially, the hotel project was planned to stand 116 metres high with 27 floors and 378 rooms. Years later, the possibility of increasing its height to 150 metres – the maximum permitted – across 30 floors was considered. Ultimately, the final design has been set at 144 metres with between 350 and 390 rooms.

Another notable change from earlier designs is the building’s shape. Initially, Málaga-based architect José Seguí’s studio was responsible for designing the luxury hotel, which featured a cylindrical structure. However, the latest version presents a rectangular building with a more minimalist style.

During the presentation, little detail was shared about the hotel's style and design. However, it was announced that the project would include a refurbishment of the Dique de Levante – the final section of Málaga’s port where cruise ships disembark and the skyscraper will be located – as well as the Paseo de la Farola, a landmark designated as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) and closely linked to the Malagueta area.

This redevelopment includes creating six expansive public spaces dedicated to commerce, tourism and hospitality, aiming to further enhance the already vibrant Muelle Uno. Additionally, the project features a convention area with a capacity of up to 2,000 people, along with green and landscaped spaces surrounding the site.

Dates and forecasts

Both the developers – Marina San SL, a company established by the Qatari investment fund Al Alfila – and the Hesperia hotel group, which will manage the luxury complex, along with the British architectural studio, have confirmed that the final design will be unveiled on 6 March.

Meanwhile, despite ongoing protests and two administrative appeals currently under review – based on claims that the project disrupts the cultural heritage of the landscape – the developers remain optimistic that construction will be completed by 2028, following an investment of approximately €120 million.
