The Holy Week of Easter in Ferrol is a set of events commemorating the Passion of Christ. It is a unique celebration that was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 2014.
Ferrol, city by the sea
To the north of the province of A Coruña in Galicia is Ferrol, a Spanish municipality traditionally dedicated to maritime activities. The fishing and commercial port, beaches and Navy facilities are the main tourist attractions of the city. Between its estuaries and its beaches, the seaside town of Ferrol is in a unique and privileged spot.
Among its points of interest are the naval museum, the Raíña Sofía municipal park, the San Felipe Castle, the Chamorro Hermitage or the beautiful neighbourhood of La Magdalena, dating from the 18th century and still retaining its checkerboard streets and galleries. In this neighbourhood, one of the most important festivals of the city takes place each year: Easter.
It should also be noted that the numerous historic buildings that are distributed around the city of Ferrol date back to the Enlightenment era and are already considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Easter in Ferrol
From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the commemoration of the Passion of Christ takes place in Ferrol. Easter is celebrated there with great tradition, fervour and feeling that make thousands of people come together year after year to watch the more than 20 processions that are organised by the five brotherhoods based in the city.
The most important dates in the Easter calendar of Ferrol are Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, when some of the most extravagant Easter parades are celebrated in the neighbourhoods of Esteiro and La Magdalena. Among these processions, the Holy Christ of Mercy and the Pontifical processions on the Thursday stand out, as do the procession of the Crucified, the procession of the Holy Burial or Os Caladiños on the Friday.
Easter in Ferrol is characterised by the sobriety and majesty of its acts, which commemorate the Passion of Christ. Throughout its history, it has also stood out for the musical bands that accompany the thrones of the Virgin and the brothers, and for its unique, firm and characteristic style.
Ferrol’s Easter celebrations are one of the most important in Galicia and they have become a very important tourist attraction for the city.
