Festival of Flowers in Girona

Temps de Flors is one of the most beautiful fiestas in the whole of Spain. It is celebrated with the arrival of spring, usually in mid-May and this year from 12th to 20th, and the idea is to decorate every corner of Girona with flowers. During these days, the whole city is filled with a very special charm.

Enjoy the great cultural offerings of Girona all year round

Girona is located in the north of Spain, in Catalonia, and is one of the main tourist destinations on the peninsula. Visitors must take advantage of the good weather to go to the Costa Brava and its famous beaches in well-known towns such as Cadaqués and Tossa de Mar.

Girona is also the perfect province for nature lovers, with important natural parks like Cap de Creus and Aigüamolls de L'Empordà. To the north it borders on the Catalan Pyrenees, and the snow and ski resorts are two more attractions for visitors. In addition, in Girona you will find several museums dedicated to the work of the great painter Salvador Dalí, such as the Dalí Theatre-Museum (Figueres) or the Salvador Dalí House-Museum (Port Lligat).

The food is another reference point in the province, with its typical dishes that use fresh produce straight from the vegetable patch, as well as its internationally renowned restaurants, such as El Bulli.

Girona, more colourful and flowery than ever

Temps de Flors is a very special popular festival. It is an atypical event full of flowers and cultural activities. The artists who participate in it create different proposals, opening their gardens and patios to everyone. In addition, it is possible to enjoy an incredible cultural experience with exhibitions, fairs, theatre, cinema, light and sound shows, music and even floral gastronomy.

Flowers inundate the entire city, the floral arrangements being tremendously beautiful and colourful. The Plaza del Vi and the Town Hall are also decorated, with even children being able to participate in the celebrations.

The festival began in the 1950s, when it was not so important and was only based on a floral exhibition in the church of Santa Domingo. Little by little, the festival gained in popularity and size, mainly when the City Council decided to get involved from 1992 onwards.

The city of Girona is covered with flowers and there is not one building that escapes its bright colours. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around town to be a part of this festival and enjoy all the decorated spaces. Some recommended streets or spaces include the Cathedral, Casa Lleó Avinay, Plaça dels Jurats, Sant Feliu and Sarraïnes.

Don't miss this incredible spring festival and the chance to surround yourself with flowers as Girona does. If it’s easier for you, just ask at tourist information centres and visit the most important places with the help of a map, because there’s no shortage of amazing sights during this festival.
