The Castell de Peralada

The Castell de Peralada Festival is one of the most important international music festivals, and it’s hosted in Catalonia, Spain. It is held during the months of July and August 2018 and the stage where it takes place is a medieval municipality in Girona.

The auditorium is located in the gardens of the Parc Castell de Peralada, a fantastic space equipped with all the necessary comforts to organise summer concerts. It is well worth a visit to this medieval town to enjoy its long, summer nights with the best classical music around.

Peralada, the historical Spanish hamlet

Peralada is a municipality located in the province of Girona that includes Vilanova de la Muga, which was added in the seventies. It is a village with a great historical background. The Viscounts of Rocabertí, for example, erected a large castle that has undergone various transformations over time. In fact, it was extended at the end of the nineteenth century by the French architect Grant.

In 1923, the property was acquired by the Mateu family, who still own it to this day. Although visitors are not able to visit the entire interior, it has been converted into a wine cellar and part of it is used as a casino, while the gardens are open to the public during July and August for the town’s great music festival.

The music festival that celebrates every genre

Every year, this festival is celebrated in the city of Peralada, Girona, and hosts shows from different musical disciplines, as well as theatre. It lasts about a month and during this time it’s possible to enjoy symphonic concerts of a world-class level, as well as opera, jazz and pop. Notable names performing in 2018 include Carla Bruni, the wife of the former French president, Rufus Wainwright, Santana and Kool & The Gang.

The theatrical performances take place in several different spaces around the town, such as the Iglesia del Carmen church and the gardens of the Castillo de Peralada castle. Three key points stand out in its programme, namely dance, lyricism and other musical styles like pop and jazz.

The idea behind the festival is to present international artists of every genre and to have a diverse programme of classical and contemporary dance shows, a multitude of concerts of every type, and classical and homegrown operas.

This music festival has been held since 1987 at the Castillo de Peralada. The environment is unique, as it creates a magical atmosphere that makes the show even more enjoyable. Recitals full of chilling voices and soaring symphonic concerts are matched by the astounding setting. The same is true of the beautiful operas that take place during the festival, as with all the other shows it hosts.
