In summer, all families are looking for a beach to spend their holidays on and, of course, the dog is part of the family. There’s no need to have your 4-legged relative stay at home – every year more and more authorities in Spain take the step and allow the dogs to play and bathe on their beaches. That's why we're bringing you the new Spanish pet-friendly beaches to go on holiday with your dog.

Take note of these new places you’re allowed to go with your pet and also of the main tips for going to the beach with your best friend: avoid the hottest hours of the day and midday, take an umbrella so you’ve always got shade, take plenty of water with you and if your dog doesn’t like going in the sea you can refresh them by wetting their head and body. Finally, even if your dog is crazy about chasing balls or sticks, try to minimize physical activity during sunny hours and remember to leave the place as you found it, with no mucky deposits.

With all this in mind, get ready to enjoy the happiness of your dog in Spain this summer on the following beaches:

1. Beach at the river Torrox

One of the most touristy towns on the Costa del Sol finally has a beach for canine recreation. This is the beach located in the area of the mouth of the river Torrox, Malaga with about 300 metres of running and playing space at your dog’s disposal. This month was its premiere as a dog-friendly beach and more than 200 people attended, including local people and tourists, with their respective dogs.

This beach, the seventh most suitable for dogs on the Costa del Sol, thoughtfully has bag dispensers and litter bins so remember to leave everything as you found it.

2. Barranquet and Aiguaoliva beaches

A stretch of Barranquet Beach in the Valencian Community allows you to go with your dog at any time of the year, including in summer – an area of about 300 metres of fine sand close to the centre of the town.

A little further away from the centre is Aiguaoliva, a 100-metre stone beach that will also accept dogs starting from this summer.

Neither one is exclusively a doggy beach, but they have been chosen for not being too overcrowded and where the dogs can easily cool down.

3. Foz and A Calzoa beaches

The coast of Pontevedra already held the title of the Galician coast with the most dog beaches, but now 2 new ones have been added. A Calzoa beach, also known as Las Barcas beach, is located in the parish of Coruxo, in Vigo. It is 175 metres long and 35 metres wide, plenty of room for dogs to run and play. The beach at Foz is very close to A Calzoa and offers an even larger area that dogs can be let off the lead in.

Both are located to the left of the mouth of the Lagares river and the dogs must be at least 150 metres from this mouth. They are also not allowed to approach the rocky area of A Calzoa where the boats are moored. Following these rules, get ready to have a great time on these northern Spanish beaches with your dog.

4. Cala del Moro and Punta Margalla beaches

About a kilometre of the beach of Punta Margalla, almost up to the curve of the Palangre, will from now on be of canine use. This is a coastline of rock and stones located north of the town of Torrevieja in the Valencian Community. Cala del Moro, on the other hand, is further from the town centre, specifically at the southern end of Cabo Cervera, close to residential areas. Both are beaches that have naturally delimitations and therefore were chosen for the recreation of dogs.

Torrevieja wants to imitate other municipalities in Alicante such as El Campello, where tourism has increased since the opening of a dog beach. Now, more and more businesses are letting in pets.
