The carnival celebrations of the town of Águilas in Murcia is one of the most famous in the south of Spain and for 2 weeks is focused around 4 fundamental characters: the Muse, who represents the festive spirit of the carnival; Doña Cuaresma, the antagonist of the Muse, who represents modesty and seriousness; Don Carnal, who gets a whole week of celebration for the carnivals, but is defeated by Doña Cuaresma; and finally La Mussona, a half human and half animal character representing the duality of human beings.

This is a carnival with more than 100 years of history which incorporates elements of tolerance, integration, extravagance and street parties as a sign and a celebration of identity and diversity.
Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered the second most popular in the world after Rio de Janeiro, the city with which it is twinned, the carnival itself aspiring to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The theme for this year’s 2020 carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is ‘The 50s’, and the festivities are set to run from 19th February to 1st March.
