The Wanda Metropolitano football stadium in Madrid will host the Champions League final 2019 between Liverpool and Tottenham on Saturday 1st June. Some 34,000 British fans are expected to travel to Madrid for the weekend of 1st and 2nd June, plus another 29,000 tickets that UEFA has. Hotel prices have risen by almost 1,000% for those dates and fans are finding it impossible to get a hotel room in Madrid city centre for less than 1,300 euro/night.
The hotels, holiday rental apartments, hostels and 5-star accommodations in Madrid are expecting to start the summer off with a bang when the final of the UEFA Champions League comes to the Spanish capital on 1st June. Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur will be facing off at one of the best football grounds in Spain, the Estadio Metropolitano, where Atlético Madrid normally play. The price of hotels for that weekend have multiplied sevenfold compared with normal prices.
Each team has been granted 17,000 tickets, and there are another 25,000 that have been reserved by UEFA as the organiser of the event. In addition, a further 4,000 tickets were put up for sale on the UEFA website, which have all now sold out. With events of this size, though, many more fans usually arrive who don’t even have tickets.
Bookings of hotel rooms and tourist accommodation in Madrid have skyrocketed in recent weeks, as have prices. Across all the different booking websites, there is nothing below 1,300 euro/night in 3-star hotels, an increase of between 900% and 1,000%. Despite these exorbitant prices, occupancy is expected to exceed 90%.
The same goes for holiday let apartments. It’s no longer possible to find anything below 1,000 euro just for the night of the match.
