In 2022, Spain attracted more than €34,178 m in foreign investment in gross terms, 13.9% more than the previous year. According to Moncloa, this is the second-highest figure recorded in the history of the DataInvex Foreign Investment Register, which began in 1993 and depends on the Secretary of the State for Trade.
In net terms (foreign investments minus their tax settlements), the figure reached €23,892 m, 9.8% more than in 2021.
According to official data, more than 87% of foreign investments went to unlisted companies and the United States was the main investor in Spain, replacing France, after recording an increase of more than 120%. The USA accounted for 27.7% of total investment flows, followed by the United Kingdom (with 17.8% of investment), Germany (14%), France (10%) and Australia (4%).
By sector, more than half of the total foreign investment in Spain (55.1%) went to the services sector, followed by industry (42.2%), then construction (2.5%) and the primary sector (0.2%).
And if we examine the data by Autonomous Community, the Community of Madrid, the Basque Country, Catalonia, the Community of Valencia and Andalusia represented 87.6% of all foreign investment received. Madrid alone attracted more than half of the country's total. On the other hand, Moncloa highlights that Andalusia, Aragon, Castile-La Mancha and the Basque Country have seen their best figures in history.
