Foreign investment in Spain plummets by more than 26% in the first half of the year

Foreign investment in Spain, without Foreign Securities Holding Entities (ETVE), has fallen by 26.6% in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period last year, reaching a volume of €11.996 billion, according to the Foreign Investment Register DataInvex of the Secretary of State for Trade.

Specifically, foreign investment in Spain has gone from €16.352 billion in the first half of 2022 (€8.240 billion in the first quarter and €8.111 billion in the second quarter) to €11.996 billion between January and June 2023 (€9.921 billion in the first quarter and €2.074 billion in the second quarter).

The Community of Madrid is the region that leads in attracting funds from abroad in the first half of the year, with €7.579 billion, 63.2% of the total.

It is followed by the Valencian Community (€2.268 billion); Catalonia, with a total of €824 million; Murcia (€371 million); the Basque Country (€310 million); Andalusia (€155 million); Aragon (€119 million) and the Balearic Islands (€104 million).

Below 100 million in foreign investment are Castile-La Mancha (88 million); Galicia (57 million); the Canary Islands (37 million); Asturias (34 million); Castile and Leon (33.6 million); Navarre (3.6 million); Extremadura (3.5 million); La Rioja (€753,000); Cantabria (€67,000) Ceuta and Melilla (€66,000).

By sector and target country

'Extraction of crude oil and natural gas' attracted the most foreign investment, with €3.4 billion. It was followed by 'health activities', with €1.758 billion, and 'telecommunications', with €1.669 billion.

In terms of the immediate country of origin of the investment, Luxembourg stands out, with €7.447 billion, followed by the Netherlands, with €1.039 billion. Investment from the rest of the countries is below €1 billion.
