The Room2030 project, designed by architect Sergio Baragaño in collaboration with ArcelorMittal's R&D centres, consists of modular units and prefab houses made in Asturias and ready in one day. This concept originated in 2018 as an evolution of the 'bhome' modular construction prototype, developed in 2016 by the same team.

Room2030's essence lies in its ability to fuse advanced technology with housing solutions, initially conceptualised as a "laboratory" type hotel room. Inspired by the design for the Palacio Ferrera hotel expansion in Avilés, Baragaño created Room2030 not only as a living space but also as a modular and sustainable solution for a variety of purposes.

Room2030's line of products includes 46 m2 and 54 m2 modular units designed for various uses, including hotels, student and senior residences, co-living and co-housing, offices, and extra spaces. These units can be arranged horizontally or vertically, so they can be implemented in many building types and environments.

Room2030 is noted for its commitment to sustainability, the configurability of its products and scalability. This is achieved through an industrialisation process that uses digital and automated assembly.

A Room2030 housing module's production process is fast and efficient. These are the time frames:

  • 1-week production.
  • 1-day transport.
  • 1-hour assembly.

Room2030 also has another production line of prefab single-family houses ranging in size from 43 m2 with one bedroom to 200 m2 with five to six bedrooms, although they can be stacked up to reach a height of up to 350 m2. In addition, the technology can be used to build high rises, offices, blocks of semi-detached houses, etc. The smaller models can be installed in about two hours. Larger ones, on the other hand, require one day.

This modular construction strategy, pioneered by Room2030 under Baragaño's leadership, has several significant advantages. Among the most significant is how quickly it can be built: a house can be finished in just 12 weeks, which is much faster than conventional methods. Moreover, emphasis is placed on aspects such as optimisation, quality, safety and versatility, as structures can be adapted and expanded according to future needs.

Additionally, these constructions can be easily relocated, which is particularly beneficial compared to larger, more permanent buildings. Room2030 also stands out with quality certifications in its manufacturing process, offering long-term guarantees and competitive prices. For example, the per-square-metre price for single-family houses is €1,600, while student residences and hotels cost €1,300 per square metre.

Room2030's mission goes beyond simply making buildings; they aspire to revolutionise the mass construction sector by making high-quality structures accessible to the wider society. Inspired by the automotive industry, Baragaño proposes an approach that starts with high-end products and then evolves towards mass production and customisation to reach a wider public.
