In 2023, Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) remained Spain’s town with the highest average declared gross income for the fifth consecutive year, at €88,011 – a 3.2% increase on 2022.

The Tax Agency has published statistics on personal income tax filers in villages with over 1,000 inhabitants (excluding the Basque Country and Navarre, which operate outside the common tax system). These figures provide a detailed overview of average gross personal income in each village and town, as well as an estimate of disposable income.

Pozuelo de Alarcón retained the top spot in 2023, with its average gross income rising to €88,011, up from €85,323 in 2022. Average disposable income also increased to €63,290, compared with €61,396 the previous year. In this town of 89,378 residents, a total of 49,171 tax returns were filed in 2023.

Boadilla del Monte, also in Madrid, climbed to second place, with an average gross income of €70,869 and a disposable income of €51,785, both higher than in 2022.

Sant Just Desvern in Barcelona moved up from fourth to third place. With 20,881 inhabitants and 11,451 tax returns, it recorded an average gross income of €67,265 and an average disposable income of €48,172 in 2023.

Fourth and fifth places are held by the Barcelona towns of Sant Cugat del Vallès, with a gross income of €66,073 and Matadepera, notable for its high income of €65,536 despite a smaller population of 9,815.

The wealthiest towns, concentrated in Madrid and Barcelona

The top 10 towns with the highest average gross income are completed by Alella (Barcelona), Torrelodones (Madrid), Aigües (Alicante), Alcobendas (Madrid) and Majadahonda (Madrid).

Overall, the provinces of Madrid and Barcelona dominate the list, with Madrid accounting for five towns and Barcelona four, while Alicante contributes one.

Towns with the lowest average gross income

At the opposite end of the scale, Benamargosa (Málaga) ranks as the lowest-income town, with an average gross income of €13,831.

Following closely, with incomes between €14,000 and €15,000, are Algarinejo, Mentejícar, Colomera and Guadahortuna (Granada); Cambil, Noalejo and Montizón (Jaén); and Zahínos and Higuera de Vargas (Badajoz).

Across Spain, average gross income rose to €31,333 in 2023, representing an annual growth of 3%, while average disposable income increased by 2.8% to €25,235 from €24,542 the previous year.
