The United Nations has released a report ranking the countries with the highest life expectancy. At the top is Monaco, with an average of 86.5 years, followed closely by San Marino (85.8) and Hong Kong (85.6). Other nations that stand out for their longevity include Japan (84.8), South Korea (84.4), and both Andorra and Australia, tied at 84.1 years.

Across Europe, longevity is the norm – and Spain shines particularly brightly. It ranks 11th, with an average life expectancy of 83.8 years, the same as Liechtenstein, and well above the global average of 73.4 years.

At the lower end of the scale are several African countries, with Nigeria at the bottom (54.6 years), followed by Chad (55.2) and the Central African Republic (57.7).

Meanwhile, countries such as the United States sit mid-table, with an average life expectancy of 79.5 years – noticeably lower than Spain and many of its European neighbours.
