Holy Week in Spain 2019 falls in the week 14th to 21st April, with Easter Sunday in Spain falling on 21st April 2019. There are many exciting events planned in Granada during these days: there are cofradías brotherhoods, processions and parades, the historical-cultural heritage and of course plenty of eating and drinking.
What to visit in Granada, Spain
Granada is a land of great cultural and artistic heritage in Andalusia and its Christian and Muslim legacy is undoubted. The most famous tourist attraction in Granada is the Alhambra, which is more than just a fortress; it is a symbol of the city. Its origins date back to the Nasrid dynasty and it is a benchmark of Muslim art that you can’t not visit when you go to Granada.
Another popular thing to visit in Granada are the Royal Baths, located in the Palace of Comares. They have been preserved incredibly well and are one of the main attractions of the city. During your Easter holidays in Granada you should also be sure not to miss the Palace of Carlos V, which is currently the headquarters of the Museum of the Alhambra and the Museum of Fine Arts.
In truth, any time of year is a good time to go to Granada, but even more so if you choose the Easter holidays. The weather in Granada for April 2019, during the Easter break, is expected to be mostly sunny but with some showers on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th April. Take the opportunity to try the local cuisine of Granada with its rich Arab heritage, top quality ingredients and subtly spiced dishes.
Semana Santa in Granada 2019
Experiencing Semana Santa in Granada is all about discovering the little streets and secrets. The historic city centre, along with other areas such as the Albaicín, the Zaidín and the Realejo, are home to the most impressive images that are brought out and paraded around the city during the processions. They represent scenes from the Bible, and sculptures such as The Holy Supper, Three Falls, the Judgment, the Christ of Silence are carried in the parades on the shoulders of volunteers in traditional costumes.
Granada can get very busy in Holy Week, so you’ll have to find a good place to be able to watch the Easter processions and see the parade floats properly, like from the Roman Bridge, the old Realejo neighbourhood of the Jewish quarter or Ángel Ganivet, near the cathedral of Granada, where you can rent chairs to sit and watch in peace.
There are many events at Easter in Granada, Spain, but one of the most impressive processions without a doubt is the Cristo de los Gitanos (which is ‘Christ of the Gypsies’ in Spanish). It is a rather hard climb for the costaleros who traverse the streets of Granada carrying the great statues until they arrive at Sacromonte. As night falls, the town fills with people and the joy, dancing and applause last until the early hours of the morning, one of the most exciting and unique events in all of Spain.
