We’ve all heard about the Erasmus programme, but what is it and how can you be a part of it? Today, we look at everything you need to know about Erasmus.
The Erasmus programme organises exchanges for students to study or work abroad in any European country that participates in the scheme. The normal length of the exchange is from 3 months to a year.
Who can apply?
Contrary to the assumption of many students, the programme is not just open to language students. You can go on Erasmus as long as you’re studying a degree or other tertiary level qualification (a Bachelor, a Master or a Doctorate) in any higher educational institution located in one of the participating countries, which is most countries in Europe.
In terms of funding, there is support available for students who go abroad. The programme provides financial aid for Erasmus students which is yet another reason to apply. There is also extra help for those who do traineeships and students from poorer backgrounds. Furthermore, no Erasmus student has to pay tuition fees, registration and exam charges or laboratory and library costs at the target institution. You can see all the grants and rates in the Erasmus+ Programme Guide.
Spain is the most popular country
Spain receives more Erasmus students annually than any other country and Erasmus students from all over the world have voted Madrid as the best place to study abroad. Seville and Barcelona are in the fifth and seventh place, respectively, making Spain the top-rated student destination. With its culture, cuisine, sights, weather and laid-back lifestyle, it really is no wonder.
Some of Europe’s best universities also happen to be in Spain. The University of Barcelona is not only one of the best, but also incredibly beautiful, with its mediaeval halls and marble steps. The University of Alcalá has a great academic offer and has been declared a world heritage site. Another interesting university is Comillas Pontificas University close to Madrid, which looks more like a castle than school. In Spain you don’t only study well, but you study with style!
