We never really think about our home insurance until we need to: when something happens, i.e. a broken window, a jammed door, a broken toilet, etc. But remember, your home insurance covers them. Is it worth paying for home insurance? Home insurance in Spain is highly recommended, and can come in handy when you find out everything that is covered. In Spain, there are several things that your home insurance covers that you might not be aware of. Here are some examples.
Everything that home insurance covers and you didn't even know
Handyman and DIY services
If you need to hang a picture, fix a dripping tap, hang some curtains that have come down or change a blind, many home insurances include a few hours of handyman hours at home, usually two or three a year (there is a maximum though, you can't use it every time you need to). Most of the time we don't even make use of them, because we didn't realise we could. They don't charge you for labour or travelling expenses but be careful, if a part needs to be replaced, you will may have to pay for it. Keep this in mind if DIY is not your thing.
Refrigerated food
There's a blackout, the power goes out for hours and the food in your fridge goes bad. Don't worry: it's covered by insurance. You will be asked for an estimate of the value of the food inside.
Power surge or short circuit
Staying with electricity, many policies will cover a power surge or if one of your electrical appliances short-circuits and its replacement.
Theft outside the home
Many home insurance policies also cover you if your wallet is stolen, for example, when you are away from home. It must be a violent robbery though: in other words, if you are robbed without realising, it will not be covered.
Burglary
For example, by picking a lock or breaking a window. Within the limits of the insurance (and after reporting it to the police, of course) the policy should cover what is stolen and the lock or window replacement.
Cracked bathroom suites
Just imagine some perfume falls into the sink and it cracks. And it gets bigger and bigger and bigger... Yes, you guessed, this kind of thing is also covered by your home insurance so don't delay in sorting it out because a new bathroom suite is a pretty penny.
Broken windows
The insurance company Tuio gives us this advice about broken windows: "Check if your insurance policy covers all your windows. You will see the windows included in the building and the interior panes in the contents. Make sure that your insurance covers bathroom suites, it is included in the building and does not have hidden exceptions. Above all, make sure that aesthetic damage has no strange exceptions and has a minimum cover capital of €2,000".
Glass ceramic hobs that break down
This is also usually covered by a multi-risk home insurance policy. Moreover, many policies include IT assistance, which is very useful if you work remotely and are self-employed and do not have a company with an IT department behind you. What's more, legal advice is also usually included: drafting of legal texts, information on building works, supply contracts, etc.
Your keys!
Have you lost your keys? Well, take a look at your home insurance policy because the insurance company usually offers a 24-hour locksmith service if you have lost them or have left them inside your house.
In short, we know that the wording of policies tends to be cumbersome (some companies do it better than others, of course), so we recommend you take a look to find out what you are covered for.
