Fuengirola has been bestowed with the 'S' for Sustainability certificate for all its beaches by the Institute of Quality Tourism of Spain (ICTE), acknowledging the high standards of its 7 kilometers of coastline. With this recognition, the municipality has joined the ranks of 20 other municipalities across the country to achieve this new environmental distinction, in addition to its Blue Flags and 'Q' for tourist quality awarded to many of its beaches. The mayor, Ana Mula, stated that the ICTE has also granted Fuengirola universal accessibility certificates, which solidify its position as having "the best beaches in Spain".
According to Mula, speaking to the Malaga newspaper Sur, the town has been consistently receiving national and international accolades over the years. Now, in addition, we can say that these spaces are 100 per cent sustainable thanks to this new certificate,” she added, as well as crediting the collaboration of the beach bars, leisure area owners, and users for the achievement, along with her council's dedication.
The new certification recognises various aspects related to the fulfilment of United Nations' sustainable development goals (SDGs), such as proper maintenance and cleaning of the sand, high-quality bathing water, efficient waste management and disposal, and accessibility, among other factors.
Four of Fuengirola's beaches have been adapted for individuals with limited mobility, for example, featuring shaded areas, wooden floors for wheelchair accessibility, and personal assistance. In the same interview, the mayor also mentioned the presence of 5 Rescue and Lifeguard Service points and a police coordination team equipped with drone surveillance service on the town's beaches.
