Fiesta de San Miguel

In September, the city of Granada celebrates its patron saint with the Fiesta de San Miguel, a popular celebration that ends each year with the pilgrimage to the San Miguel hill.

This celebration takes place in the famous district of Albaicín in the city and many people go to visit and enjoy the festival every year. There are lots of cultural and leisure activities which take place which both the inhabitants of the town and tourists attend with great enthusiasm.

Granada, an Andalusian white town the size of a city

Granada is a city with thousands of years of history, wonderful landscapes, special customs and friendly and hospitable people. It is full of the white houses typical of Andalusia, guarded by the mountains of Sierra Nevada. The province also stands out for its other beautiful landscapes including the fertile plains of Granada and the coast, each with their own climate and charm.

Granada is also an ideal tourist destination where you can walk along hiking trails, do winter sports in the mountains and a take tour of its Andalusian heritage, with the Alhambra palace being the obvious focal point for all visitors.

The summers in Granada are warm and the winters are perfect for enjoying the snow and a bit of skiing. It shares borders with the provinces of Malaga, Cordoba, Jaen and Almeria, all of which you are recommended to visit at any time to make the most of your stay. Then there’s the food with a strong Arab influence which comes from the city’s past, which is just spectacular.

Granada has an incredibly rich historical and cultural background. It is the birthplace of such illustrious figures as the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca and in the nearby town of Santa Fe, the terms were signed between the Catholic Monarchs and the famous navigator named Christopher Columbus to start his famous voyage.

Why should you go to the San Miguel festival?

At the end of September, the Albaicín neighbourhood dresses up to celebrate this great festival. It is usually a simple celebration, without big pretensions, with a very pleasant and endearing atmosphere. It’s also the perfect excuse to get to know Granada better. The whole neighbourhood was declared a World Heritage Site, and you’ll understand why once you see its winding, cobbled streets, its ancient houses and its sudden viewing points over the entire city.

When it comes to enjoying the festival of San Miguel, one of the most notable popular festivals in Granada, remember that it is divided into three parts. On the one hand there are the official acts, then there is the pilgrimage which takes place on Sunday 30th, and finally the fun leisure activities like flamenco dancing, music, street concerts, lots of food, beer and wine and various sporting events.

This is a truly enchanting fiesta organised for the residents of Albaicín, the people of Granada in general and all tourists who want to visit. It’s well worth visiting Granada at this time and enjoying the flamenco show that takes place in this exceptional setting with a festive atmosphere.
