Lanzarote is one of the Spanish Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of western Africa. Warm weather all year round and an endless variety of exciting activities ensure that Lanzarote has become a top destination for ex-pats and holidaymakers alike.
One particularly curious tourist attraction on the island of Lanzarote is an underwater museum, the “Museo Atlántico”. Submerged in the waters off the golden beaches of the Canaries, this museum is the first underwater museum in Europe and features sunken figures arranged in funny and thought-provoking poses.

Located 12 metres below the surface of the water on the seabed off the southern coast of the island, near the Bahía de Las Coloradas, the Lanzarote Museum is comprised of 12 exhibits. The statues were created and installed by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of the conservation of marine environments and creating habitats the favour and promote the reproduction of native animal and plant life.
To visit this spectacular and spooky museum, you have to hire some scuba gear from certain local diving shops in Lanzarote and take a guided tour with a group. It is open to the public from 9:30 to 17:30, Monday to Saturday, and tickets cost between 8 and 12 euro, not including diving gear and certification.
