A small town in Palencia is looking for a family with children to move to the area, and has already had over 500 applicants from both Spain and abroad. The dilemma of what is known as "la España Vaciada", or 'empty Spain'  is back in the news with a new proposal by local authorities to try to repopulate the area. With other villages in Spain offering free houses in 2020, Tabanera de Cerrato is the latest village to offer a free house in Spain in 2021. The village is located in the Cerrato region of Palencia and has only 142 inhabitants. With its population dwindling in recent times, the local council has launched this initiative, offering both a house and business in the hope of repopulation

The mayoress of Tabanera de Cerrato, Luz Íscar, recently launched an appeal to families wanting to move to the area, but what she did not expect was that she would receive a flood of requests from all over the world. From Holland and Argentina, to the rest of Spain, more than 500 applicants have expressed interest in a house that is in the process of being renovated in the village and the grocery store that is located on the ground floor. The idea of this initiative is that the new residents would live in this property and run the local grocery store.

"We wanted to provide a business for the family and a service for the village," the mayoress told Agencia EFE in a recent interview. The house is being renovated through a programme run by Junta de Castilla y León, and the premises on the ground floor will be set up with the support of the local authorities in Palencia. Although the announcement has been made quickly, work on the house will not be completed until May.

The mayoress and her board of governors have their work cut out for them in choosing one of the aspiring families, and have already confirmed that it will be a slow process. "We are looking for an enterprising family, who are looking for a change of life and who can adapt to living in a town in Castile and León. At the same time, we have found that there are many desperate people, who are having a hard time and need help."

Luz Íscar also stated that the new grocery shop could potentially serve this village and the surrounding villages such as Antigüedad and Palenzuela, areas where the residents currently have to travel to the further away Torquemada or Palencia to do their shopping. "We are convinced that there will be a boom of people who, after this pandemic, will want to develop their life project in a village and we want to be prepared to receive them", the mayoress concluded in an interview.
