According to the NextGen Travellers and Destinations report by Deloitte and Google, Spain is expected to be the most-visited tourist destination in the world in 2040 with 110 million arrivals, followed by France with 105 million, the US (100 million) and China (90 million). The study, resulting from a collaboration between Deloitte and Google, analyses how the travel industry has evolved since 1990 and the foreseeable dynamics until 2040.
In doing so, it also estimates that the number of trips worldwide will reach 2.4 billion by 2040 – 63.9% more than those recorded in 2019, the year before the pandemic generated by COVID-19.
According to the analysis, the increase in the number of trips will be due to the middle classes growing around the world. By geographical areas, travellers from Europe and the Asia Pacific will represent more than 70% of travel, while the main issuing countries will be the same as in 2019 (China, the USA, the UK and Germany) with the addition of India.
As for arrivals, Europe and the Asia Pacific will represent 47% and 27% of arrivals, with 1.12 billion and 640 million travellers, respectively. The five countries with the most traveller arrivals in 2040 will be Spain, France, USA, China and Mexico, which will account for 20% of the total.
The Deloitte and Google study concludes that 45% of the total number of travellers worldwide will be concentrated in four destinations, namely the Mediterranean (480 million), Southeast Asia (255), the New Middle East (175) and the Caribbean (145).
