More remote professionals are embracing the 'workcation', a travel style that merges workdays with exploration by swapping a home office for a new city. Tokyo has been named the best city for a workcation, securing the top position in the global list. Following the Japanese capital is Rio de Janeiro in second place, with Barcelona earning a notable fifth position in the highly competitive ranking.

Barcelona's position in the global workcation ranking

In the latest global ranking by the International Workplace Group (IWG), Barcelona has secured the fifth position among the world's best cities for a workcation in 2025. This achievement cements the city's reputation as one of the best cities in the world for digital nomads.

The findings, published in IWG's third annual 'Work from Anywhere Barometer', evaluated 40 cities based on a range of factors crucial for remote professionals. These included internet speed, the cost of living, accommodation, transport, and the availability of cultural and leisure activities. Barcelona performed particularly well in the Happy City Index, achieving a score on par with Tokyo. The city's high ranking places it ahead of other major European hubs such as Lisbon (7th), Rome (8th) and Paris (9th).

Key factors behind Barcelona's appeal for remote workers

Barcelona's high ranking is attributed to its strong performance across several key metrics that are essential for the modern remote professional. The city offers a compelling blend of efficient professional infrastructure and an exceptional quality of life.

Professional infrastructure for the modern worker

A significant element of Barcelona's appeal is its well-developed infrastructure that caters to remote work. The city boasts reliable, high-speed internet and an extensive network of co-working spaces and laptop-friendly cafes.

Lifestyle and leisure opportunities

The city's cultural offerings received a top score, reflecting its rich landscape of world-class museums, iconic architecture, and a dynamic events calendar. Furthermore, its Mediterranean climate, accessible beaches, and renowned culinary scene provide ample opportunities for relaxation and exploration outside of working hours.

Spain's growing reputation as a workation destination

Barcelona's prominent placement in the IWG ranking is indicative of a broader trend that has seen Spain's profile as a prime remote working hub grow significantly. The nation's combination of high-quality infrastructure, affordable living, and desirable climate has led to it being recognised in various studies as the best destination in the world for remote work.

This rising reputation is further supported by proactive government policies aimed at attracting international talent. The introduction of Spain's digital nomad visa has simplified the process for non-EU citizens to live and work in the country, officially endorsing Spain as an accessible and welcoming destination for the global remote workforce.
