Flamenco is part of a very special tradition in Spain. It is lived and felt with particular devotion in Andalusia, but this artform is ubiquitous throughout Spain in one form or another. Here, we have selected the most important flamenco festivals in Spain for you, so you can join in with the emotion and feeling just like the locals.
1. Flamenco Festival, Jerez de la Frontera
The Jerez de la Frontera Flamenco Festival is held annually in February and March. The shows stand out for their quality performers, where dancing, singing and the specialist flamenco guitar are the stars of the show.
This flamenco festival also makes room for other interesting activities like courses, workshops and master classes in different venues across the city.
2. Suma Flamenca, Madrid
Suma Flamenca is one of the most inspiring summer festivals. It has been held in Madrid since 2005 and since then its popularity has spread internationally. For an entire month, the city opens the doors of its halls and theatres to this ancient Spanish art with a varied programme. This event takes in endless flamenco shows in which both established figures and young talents take part.
3. International Cante de Las Minas Festival, Murcia
The Festival Internacional del Cante de Las Minas is an annual event in which young prodigies from the world of flamenco participate. In fact, it is a competition that takes place in La Unión (Murcia) and which dates back to the sixties. It is one of the most eagerly awaited August festivals, as future figures of flamenco singing are born here, as was the case of the famous flamenco star Miguel Poveda.
4. Flamenco Biennial, Seville
The Bienal de Flamenco in Seville is a spectacular music festival that takes place during the month of September. Many spaces in this famous Spanish city open their doors to the great flamenco artists of the day.
The Espacio Turina, the local bullring, the Factoría Cultural and the Port of Seville all host unforgettable performances and serve as a showcase for future flamenco superstars. It is held every two years and started for the first time back in 1979.
5. Flamenco On Fire, Pamplona
During the last week of August, a festival takes place in Pamplona that pays tribute to Sabicas, a guitar prodigy who lived in the United States for a long time, hence the concert’s English name, Flamenco On Fire.
It is surely one of the most popular flamenco festivals in the whole country, where young amateurs also take part in a night known as Young Navarrese Talents. The festival is also quite ambitious and has seen flamenco artists of the calibre of Farruquito, Remedios Amaya, Antonio Canales and José Mercé play there, among countless others.
