Are there any privately owned islands in Spain? There are, in fact, several. On the Spanish coast there is a selection of private islands that consist of just few hectares of land, some of which have luxury villas where you can enjoy an exclusive holiday. Others, on the other hand, offer unspoilt natural landscapes perfect for an excursion. These are the 12 private islands in Spain:

Just 900 metres from busy Ibiza, this island occupies a total of 60 hectares and can be rented for special events or exclusive holidays. Those who pay to spend a few hours or days on this island have access to an incredible villa with a saltwater pool, gym, barbecue, hot tub and butler service, as well as a personal chef and boat captain. This is not to mention access to the beautiful surrounding beaches. The island has already been visited by celebrities such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Justin Timberlake, and was also recently one of the private islands for sale in Spain.

S'Espalmador

Still in the Balearic archipelago, but this time close to the coast of Formentera, is the island of S'Espalmador, a completely unspoilt landscape that belongs to the Ses Salines Natural Park. It measures barely 2 square kilometres and is a small paradise surrounded by crystal-clear waters. As it is a protected area, it has only been possible to build two small Ibizan-style villas, a chapel, a lighthouse and a watchtower. The island is currently not for sale, but it is known that its most recent owners bought it for 18 million euros.

Burguillo

In this case we are not talking about an island in the sea, but in the province of Castilla y León, in Ávila. In the middle of the Burguillo reservoir is this islet surrounded by mountains and forests, and with a walled castle, it is perfect for holding events such as a wedding, for example, or for renting as a weekend retreat.

Sa Ferradura

This island is home to Ibiza's most expensive house, which can be rented out and includes a 23-metre swimming pool, a gym, a dance floor with space for a DJ and some 22 workers at the service of guests. The villa, which was renovated with sustainable technology, belongs to Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, former owner of the NBA team the Brooklyn Nets. The property was awarded by World's Best Boutique Hotel 2018 as the best holiday estate in Europe.

Baron

Also known as Isla Mayor, this Spanish private island has been owned by the Figueroa family for five generations. It measures 93 hectares and is located 20 minutes from the Murcian coast. Its owners wanted to dedicate this space to ecology and sustainability, focusing above all on the protection of different species of birds, among which falcons stand out. The island also has a small palace and a Mudejar-style tower.

Sa Conillera

Returning to the coast of Ibiza, this island forms part of the Reserva Natural des Vedrà and has very rich fauna and flora, including unique animals, such as the native subspecies of lizard known as Podarcis Pityusensis Cunicularia. The island belongs to the Matutes family and has two houses and a lighthouse.

Colom

Near Menorca is this island that belongs to the Albufera de Grao Natural Park and measures 59 hectares. In addition to clear water beaches full of biodiversity, the island has a lot of history. It once housed a hospital where infectious diseases were treated and has also been the site of mining and farming activities. It currently belongs to the Meruelo Investment business group after they bought it in 2018 from the Roca family for 3.2 million euros.

Perdiguera

We return to the Mar Menor with its second largest island, measuring 25.7 hectares. Close to San Javier, this fragment of land is known to be an important archaeological site as multiple items from Roman times have been found there. It is called Perdiguera due to the large number of partridges that inhabit the area and currently belongs to Tomás Fuertes, president of the El Pozo food group in Spain.

Montaña Clara

Near La Graciosa, to the north of Lanzarote, is the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park, which includes the Integral Reserve of the Islets where this island of 1.3 km2 is located and which stands out for its light earth colour. Since 1957 it has belonged to the heirs of Mariano López Socas, former mayor of Haría, and since 2007 the State has been trying to acquire its ownership through an agreement with the family.

Alegranza

Next to Montaña Clara is this uninhabited virgin island that houses a lighthouse declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002. Its beautiful views and beaches suffer from the accumulation of large quantities of rubbish, fishing nets and plastics that wash ashore, something that has already been denounced by researchers from the EOMAR group of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Toralla

In front of Vao de Vigo beach is this exclusive island made up of more than 20 villas and a high tower of more than 20 floors. Although public entities are trying to allow free access, for the moment it is for the exclusive use of its guests.

Sisargas Islands

In the Galician town of Malpica de Bergantiños lies this archipelago of 3 islands: Grande, Chica and Malante. Although today they are uninhabited, the remains of the hermitage of Santa Mariña and its lighthouse from the mid-19th century show that there were once people living here. The lighthouse was refurbished in the early 20th century and automated in 2002. Today they are a refuge for several seabirds such as the black-headed gull or the common guillemot. They belong to the heirs of Count Altamira although the local government is trying to negotiate their purchase so that they become part of the Illas Atlánticas Natural Park.
